Type Locality and Naming

It was named as the “Deren Andesite Member” by the No. 107 Party under the Coalfields Administration of Northeast China in 1958. The naming section is located at the Xinsheng Village, Pinggan District, Xifeng County, Liaoning Province, with its reference section being situated in the area of the Deyu Village of Xifeng County.

Lithology and Thickness

This formation is composed mainly of andesitic agglomerate and tuff, intercalated with sandstone and conglomerate, with a thickness of about 456-1520 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is in a disconformable contact with the underlying Xiajiajie Fm. In most regions it overlies directly old metamorphosed rocks or granite.

Upper contact

Next younger regional unit is the Jiuda Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed mainly in the area of Lingzhen, Liaoyuan City to Dongfeng Basin, Jilin Province, as well as Xinsheng Village and Deyu Village in the vicinity of the Pinggang Coal Mine, Xifeng County, Liaoning Province.

No fossils have been found in the formation.


Age 

The age of Deren Formation is in need of confirmation by fossils and/or radiometric isotopic dating. Schematic strat column suggests late Kimmeridgian age.
